Clinical Training Sites

The University of Connecticut Health Center/John Dempsey Hospital

The University of Connecticut Health Center and John Dempsey Hospital are the primary training sites for the geriatric psychiatry fellowship program. The health center will also be the principal location for didactic sessions, including grand rounds. Overall, the University of Connecticut Health Center is a vibrant medical center that is devoted to academics, research, and clinical care. It is a recognized leader in these fields. Additionally, the health center provides high-quality health care and is a global trailblazer in bioscience innovation.

Fellows will rotate through the University of Connecticut Health Center and its affiliated sites for the following rotations: Talcott Notch Road Geriatric Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, UConn Health Center – Electroconvulsive Therapy, UConn Health Center – General Medicine/Psychiatry Clinic, UConn Health Center – Huntington’s Disease Clinic; John Dempsey Hospital – Palliative Care Service; and John Dempsey Hospital – Inpatient Geriatric and Medical Psychiatry.

Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital

The Institute of Living, founded in 1822, is one of the country’s leading mental health centers. It was the first hospital of any kind to be established in Connecticut and the third mental health facility to be opened in the United States. The Institute is a psychiatric landmark. It is a place where moral treatment was refined. Today, it is known for excellence in psychiatric care, research, and training. It is a division of nationally recognized, Hartford Hospital, which is the second largest hospital in Connecticut.

Fellows will rotate at the Institute of Living for a yearlong rotation in the geriatric psychiatry specialty clinic. The rotation will allow fellows to obtain longitudinal experience in the outpatient care of elders.

Amberwoods of Farmington

Amberwoods of Farmington is a private skilled nursing facility located in Farmington, CT. It utilizes an interdisciplinary team approach to help patients reach their highest state of functional well being. The facility offers a high staff to patient ratio, and provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy treatment to its residents.

Fellows will rotate one-half day a week for six months at this site. They will gain experience as nursing home consultants. They also will learn how to comprehensively assess and treat elders in the skilled nursing setting who are suffering from a variety of psychiatric ailments.

The Reservoir

The Reservoir is a 75-bed skilled nursing facility that offers short-stay suites, as well as long term care and hospice care, with a long list of amenities. The Reservoir prides itself on providing a high level of patient service combined with skilled care.

Fellows will rotate one-half day a week for six months at this site and will gain experience in the field of nursing home consultation.
