Pediatric Urology

Welcome to the University of Connecticut Pediatric Urology Fellowship at Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

The goal of our fellowship program is to train proficient pediatric urologists to care for a full range of genitourinary disorders. Our program offers exposure to a complex range of medical and surgical cases. We perform innovative surgical procedures and have research opportunities in clinical outcomes and basic science research.

Each fiscal year we perform more than 1,000 O.R. procedures and average approximately 8,000 outpatient visits.


During their training, the fellow will increase their medical knowledge to understand the full range of management options. We expect the fellow to polish their sophisticated operative skills during fellowship.

We have partnered with pediatric general surgery to have our fellow spend one month on their service. This rotation will focus on trauma management and common operative cases. We have also partnered with Dr. Philip Smith to increase the complexity of our urodynamics program. The fellow will receive didactic and hands-on training in urodynamics to shape their management of future patients.

The leaders of our program include our key faculty staff, Dr. John Makari, and Dr. Fernando Ferrer, and Dr. Eric Nelson, who have a high operative volume with a wide range of cases to challenge the fellow's skill set. This includes but is not limited to laparoscopic and robotic surgery, complex reconstructive cases, and challenging oncologic cases.

The key faculty will drive the fellow to perform at their highest level. Their supervision during didactic conferences, in the clinic setting, and in the operating room will set the foundation for the training program. The research interests already being pursued by our group will provide the fellow with many avenues of focus

During their first year, the fellow will gradually increase their independence clinically. During their second year, the fellow will pursue research goals and will continue to have supervision but should be more autonomous in practice.
