PGY-2

Dr. Bali Ponzu Dr. Bali Ponzu was born in the tropical island of Barbados and had a nomadic upbringing so her “hometown” is ever changing! She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.S. in Anthropology and Molecular & Cellular Biology. She obtained a M.A. in Medical Sciences from Loyola University Chicago and completed medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She completed her intern year in General Surgery at the University of Arizona. Bali believes the strength of the residency program is the small class size, which allows for individualized education and training.

In her spare time, Bali enjoys exploring new countries and cultures, dancing, hiking, listening to real crime podcasts, American politics, eating, binge watching Netflix, and playing with her Siberian Husky.
Dr. Edward Gillis Dr. Edward Gillis was born and raised in Lynbrook, New York. He attended Hofstra University, where he graduated with a major in Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. After college, he received his Medical Degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed his medicine intern year in Internal Medicine at the New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital. Ed finds the strengths of the program to be the small class size, which enables the residents to receive daily one-to-one teaching that is directly tailored to the individual resident, by faculty who are subspecialty trained.

In his spare time, Ed enjoys computer programming, sports, weight lifting, video games, and hanging out with friends.

PGY-3

Dr. John DeBevits Dr. John DeBevits was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He attended the University of Florida, where he graduated with a major in Interdisciplinary Sciences and a minor in Philosophy. He received his Medical Degree from St. George's University in Grenada, West Indes, and completed his Intern year in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut. . Johnny finds the strengths of the program to be the palpable sense of camaraderie as well as rewarding and enjoyable interactions with the attendings. He also believes being in the state of Connecticut is unique because it is itself beautiful and only a short drive from many other wonderful places.

In his spare time, Johnny enjoys hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, scuba diving, disc golf, video games, good food and hanging out with friends or his dog, Hiro.
Dr. Allan Zhang Dr. Allan Zhang grew up and went to high school in Derby CT. He received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University and his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of osteopathic medicine. He completed his preliminary internal medicine residency from Griffin Hospital in his hometown and one year of anesthesiology residency before making the switch to radiology. Allan finds the strengths of the residency to be the small class size, lending to daily one-on-one teaching from friendly and welcoming staff, and excellent fellowship placement.

In his spare time, he enjoys baseball, poker, and crossfit.
Dr. Atul Kumar Dr. Atul Kumar was born outside of Dayton, Ohio but was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he worked as an IT Supply Chain Consultant for the firm Manhattan Associates for two and a half years. He then went back to school to obtain his Masters in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University and his medical degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. He completed his surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

In his spare time, Atul enjoys staying active by traveling and playing outdoor sports, such as basketball, tennis, swimming, and skiing. He also enjoys spending time with family and friends. Even though he is a very active person, he also enjoys staying in and binge watching Netflix. 

PGY-4

Samantha Huq, MD Dr. Samantha Huq is from Southern Connecticut. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience from Wellesley College. After completing her undergraduate degree, she served as a Fulbright Scholar for a year conducting research on neuro-developmental disorders. She then earned her MD/MPH as a dual degree candidate from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and subsequently completed her intern year at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

In her spare time, Samantha enjoys running, swimming and traveling. Samantha finds the strengths of the residency program to be the outstanding faculty who provide excellent one-on-one teaching, camaraderie among all staff members and strong fellowship placement.
Elena Violari, MD Dr. Elena G. Violari was born and raised on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. She received her Medical Degree from the University of Athens Medical School in Greece. Following her graduation, she completed a one year research fellowship in Interventional Oncology, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Dr. Violari completed her internship in general surgery, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, in Baltimore.

In her spare time she enjoys music, guitar, running, horse riding, dance, art and travelling. Elena finds the strengths of her residency program to be the small class size allowing close interactions between faculty and co-residents, resulting in excellent educational opportunities and patient care, partnered with the experience of living in the beautiful New England state of Connecticut.

Dr. Ryan Joyce Dr. Ryan Joyce grew up in Lauderhill, Florida. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He completed medical school at St. George’s University, and his intern year at the University of Connecticut.

In his spare time he enjoys music, computer technology, skiing, family time, and PC gaming.

Ryan finds the strengths of the residency to be the small class size, lending to daily one-on-one teaching from attendings, friendly staff, high morale, and excellent fellowship placement.
Dr. Jeffrey Guzelian Dr. Jeffrey Guzelian hails from Denver, CO. He has a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He went to the University of Colorado for both medical school and intern year. He enjoys skiing, snowboarding, hiking, weightlifting, and writing.
